Norton 360 2.0 Mistrusts Firefox 3/ Bookmarks Gone

Hi.  My name is Randy Rooney and I am one of the bloggers here at NewsLink Briefs.  I have a couple of things to share with you today that may help you with your blogging efforts.

But first of all I wanted to ask you . . . .Have you ever noticed that when you click on something and maybe change your mind and want to click on something else you can still do it?   If you click on your second choice just one millionth of a second before the screeen disappears you will make it to your destination of choice.   That’s pretty cool, isn’t it?   It’s like a General Motors factory that is busy making your Chevrolet but just before they put the hubcaps on you change your mind and “BAM”  here comes a Pontiac out the door.

Does GM still make Pontiacs?  Are they still in business?

Alright here’s our main order of business.   Have you ever noticed that if you use Firefox 3 and then you install Norton 360 2.0  your bookmarks all disappear?

And then your forward and backward buttons stop working?

Have you ever tried to use a browser without a forward or a backward button?   It’s really difficult.  And on top of that all your bookmarks are gone and you have no idea what happened to them!

Where did they Go?!!

Well here’s a solution to your problem.  First you have to understand that Norton 360 2.0 thinks that Firefox 3 is the enemy.  Apparently nobody at Symantecs bothered to tell it that most people love Firefox 3 and consider it one of the good guys.

So, anyway, here’s what you do.  First select File in the top left part of your Firefox 3 browser.  Then go down to exit and click on it.   Next  right click on a blank part of your Windows taskbar at the bottom of your screen.  Select Task Manager.  Now look under the Processes tab for firefox.exe and hit END PROCESS.

If there is no firefox.exe there just skip this part .  Now right click your Start Button and hit Windows Explorer.   Look at C:Program FilesMozilla FirefoxComponents .

Delete the file coFFPlgn.dll from this folder.  If it doesn’t delete check firefox.exe to make sure it is gone.

Now check your bookmarks.  Hello!  They should be back.  And here are your back and forward buttons too. If you find the little sucker keeps coming back check here in your lovely Symentac files.

Program files/common files/symantec shared/coshared/browser/2.6/coFFPlgn.dll

Sometimes you have to get back in the nest to zap the little critters for good.

So that’s it for now.  I hope you have enjoyed our time together.  Why don’t you grab a feed?  You don’t want to miss some of the other bloggers who are active on this site.  Some of them are total idiots.

You don’t want to miss that.

The Lion Fish/ Death In The Bahamas

2836868435 b0de3dca3a The Lion Fish/ Death In The Bahamas

Deadly Lion Fish, originally uploaded by Davidlind.

When we were in the Bahamas recently we heard a lot about this little fish.  It is the deadly Lion Fish and the population of them is growing rapidly in this area and elsewhere.   All you need to do is brush up against it and you will have a terrible time.

They do look very different from your average fish.

Some of those who told us about this fish blame Atlantis.  They say the eggs were flushed out of the aquarium and this started up the whole mess.   I have no idea.  But they are a terrible problem.  The Bahamian government will pay Bahamians fifty dollars apiece for each fish they catch and turn in I was told.

Dylan Thomas (part II)/ Rage Against the Dying of the Light

Table of contents for Dylan Thomas

  1. Dylan Thomas/ Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night
  2. Dylan Thomas (part II)/ Rage Against the Dying of the Light

Thomas returns again and again to the theme of the unity and holiness of all existence.  He is in the tradition of Blake, Wordsworth and Whitman.  But he is not there all the time.  There is conflict.  And so we have lines like this one.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

If it is a “good night” then it is something to be desired.  Have a “good night” is something we wish for our friends.  So why should we “rage” against the “dying of the light”?

And so there is ambivalence here.  Perhaps there are moments of clarity for Thomas when he sees the unity of all things.  But then he loses his vision and falls into a slumber or alcohol intoxication.

But Thomas was direct in his poetry.  He was blunt, forthright and full of explosive feeling.  He was an entertainer and did his poetry much good by traveling throughout the US several times and reciting it.  If he was a blogger he would understand how to reach the feeds of many readers.

His poetry is full of images that suited the age to which he belonged.

“The force that through the green fuse drives the flower”  brings to my mind the image of an atomic blast which was so shockingly present during that time.  “Light breaks where no sun shines”  does the same thing.  His metaphors are rich and complex.  He illustrates a world of driving forces, resistance and explosions.  Do flowers and atomic clouds seem antithetical to you?  Remember the little girl who picked daisies in that famous commercial the Johnson team used against Barry Goldwater?  If they can be used in an election ad they certainly can become part of a poem.

Dylan Thomas was perhaps not a great poet.  It is difficult to pin down his meanings.  But he was definitely the poet for his times.  And it is not surprising that he burned himself up at an early age like so many flamboyant entertainers a decade or two later.

It is rumored that Bob Dylan changed his name because of his admiration of Dylan Thomas.  Who knows?

Chris Botti with Renee Olstead/ Pennies From Heaven

Let’s go up tempo for this one.  Chris Botti does a lot of beautifully slow ballads.  So it’s nice to see him go a little crazy every once in awhile.  And Renee is just the one to make it happen.
